I’m so jealous that you live in Auckland and get to see all the filming locations. If I ever travel up that way, we’ll have to arrange a day where you can show me all the filming spots

To be fair, the outside of the bar is the only location I’ve really been to because it’s in the centre of town and really close to my university. Oh and the beach where Ty runs to in the first episode, as well as Piha where Olaf always goes.

But the area where they house the production company that makes TAJ and other New Zealand shows such as Shortland Street is on the train line that I’m close to.

I am slowly making an effort to figure out where everything else is. I guess Auckland isn’t THAT massive in the scheme of things, and with a little digging I can figure stuff out! If you ever come to Auckland, we can definitely make a trip of the filming spots :)

Remember when Ty said to Dawn that Anders told her Ty was gay so that Anders could have Dawn all to himself? Well she was only half right, He tells people that Ty is gay so that he can have TY all to himself. Also, LOVELY headcanon!!

Headcanon totally accepted

That conversation is the first thing Ty remembers when he learns the latest thing Anders has done.

Anders lets slip just what it was he said to Dawn after explaining why this strange man declared his love for her. He told her not to worry about Ty, that he was taken. By another man.

Ty is furious with Anders, because once again, his dipshit older brother is meddling in his life. It’s so typical of Anders that Ty is not surprised, but it the anger pierces through him with each breath that he takes as he yells at Anders, telling him what an asshole he is.

The only difference is, is that this time, Anders is not laughing over what he did. He’s deadly serious. He stands there, completely accepting what Ty is dishing out to him, not a smirk in sight.

When Ty is done yelling, Anders finally responds.

“I meant it. I meant that you were taken - by me.”

Ty was ready to start yelling at Anders again, but Anders response completely winds him with shock; he’s speechless.

He couldn’t mean that - could he?!

But the look on Anders’ face - a hint of pain, and something seldom seen on him - shame - makes Ty know that Anders has never been more serious in his life.

Day One: Why did you start watching “The Almighty Johnsons”?

WARNING: LONG STORY AHEAD

I’m afraid my fate and story is similar to many others who have done this challenge before me.

I saw the Hobbit for the first time, and I thoroughly enjoyed the characters of Fili and Kili. Tumblr had lots of coverage and things about them, and my interest in Dean O’Gorman and Aidan Turner started to grow.

Then I saw the Hobbit for a second time. And that converted me. I was a full-fledged fan, and I had to see more of these wonderful actors.
A chance journey to Australia at the end of January lead me to have the opportunity to pick up some cheap DVDs, so I decided to give Being Human a go. I bought the first season, and enjoyed it.

Next on my list was to give The Almighty Johnsons a go. Despite living in New Zealand, I literally knew NOTHING of what it was about (I would ignore the commercials for it when I did see it, and that wasn’t very often as I was living somewhere without a television). But I figured, why not give more New Zealand television a go? If I want to be a part of the media industry, it would be hypocritical of me to shun everything that we produce.

So I watched the first episode. And it was nothing like what I was expecting. It was so much more. I watched the first four or five episodes in a row in the middle of the night. I was hooked. I finished the first season within a few days. It was just that good! It had the perfect balance of humour, drama, supernatural-ness and family dynamics.

And holy shit, I discovered that all the New Zealand in-jokes and references made me feel like I was at home. The accents and the slang just made the dialogue that much better. Whenever they made a dig at Waiheke Island, I found it infinitely funny because now that I live in Auckland, I understand references such as those.

I then went to the library the next day and got the entire second season out from the library to support my local economy.

My birthday was not long after, and the first thing I bought was the first season on DVD. And then the second season. And now I sit here, rocking back and forth, once a week walking past the location where they film the outside of Mike’s bar, just waiting for Season 3 to arrive.

Question to any aussies who have been to NZ: How much do you reckon (round about) it would cost for about 4-5 days trip, plane and accom included?

Not Australian, but depending on whereabouts in New Zealand you’re flying to (I’m basing this on Auckland, which is the cheapest), a return trip would cost you roughly $AUD800? That’s if you’re looking at going soonish, it will probably be way cheaper if you book months in advance. And I think it’s cheaper going from the main cities (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne).

You can get rates at youth hostels for as low as 20 bucks a night (Australian dollars) I’m pretty sure.

And once you’re in New Zealand, you can get reasonably cheap flights to the major hub cities in New Zealand - Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown with either Air New Zealand or Jetstar. Flights between these cities can be as low as 50 New Zealand dollars each way, but you’d be safer estimating paying around $100 New Zealand each way.

Buses between cities in New Zealand are also very cheap and they are reasonably frequent from all the popular touristy towns and cities.

When booking the international flights, I would also recommend visiting the New Zealand version of the website (particularly if you’re looking at flying with Air New Zealand) as it tends to be cheaper, but check both sites and the exchange rate to be safe.

I found that restaurants and stuff tend to be more expensive in Australia (or at least the Gold Coast; might be different for where you are), so you’d generally expect to pay a little less (ie a Starbucks coffee costs 5 bucks AUD in Australia, and 5 bucks NZD in New Zealand, thus being cheaper).

And then of course you’d want to budget for any extra spending you might want to do (day trips to Hobbiton etc haha). The big touristy things are expensive, but everyone I know says they’re worth it!

What cities are you looking at? I am mainly familiar with Auckland and Wellington, so I can recommend some fun, cheaper things to do there if you need any ideas :)

Thank you! :) It’s a wonderful feeling to know that I’ll soon start to have a little bit of disposable income and not have to be so scrupulous as to what I buy when I go food shopping or something haha!

That’s a really good question. It’s like they thought at the beginning “YEAH! Seven Narnia books to make lots of juicy cash from!!” and they did the first one and it was great, and then they did the second one and that was pretty sweet as well, and then the third one they changed directors, shifted the filming to Australia and then was never heard from again.

I haven’t even HEARD about plans to make any of the other ones. Maybe they don’t have the rights?
